Federal Government, indirectly funding AFRICOM – Rep

AFRICOM is the United States military's new command centre for Africa aimed at assisting Africa achieve its security and leadership efforts.
Davies, in an interview with our correspondent said “Africans have said they do not want AFRICOM but Liberia went ahead to provide a haven for it.
“By canceling Liberia's debt, Nigeria is now providing an enabling environment for AFRICOM to be set up.
“America should stop setting military bases all over the world,” he added.
He alleged that some of the problems across the world today were borne out of America's desire to police the whole world.
“America cannot police the world. If it feels threatened, it should begin to tailor its policies in a way that it will not be threatened.
“These are some of the things Nigerians should ponder about,” he said.
“People should feel free and stop looking behind when they are independent,” Davies said.
Also, former External Affairs Minister, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, said AFRICOM was detrimental not only to Nigeria but to Africa as a continent.
He commended the Federal Government for taking a decisive stand in rejecting the body.
“America has a global interest and in protecting such interests, it makes enemies all over the world.
“As America pursues such interests, so does its enemies pursue American interests wherever they find them”, he said.
Akinyemi said: “I do not want my country or the West African sub-region to become a theatre of war or antagonism between US and some other interests”.
He noted that the planned debt cancellation was a signal to the Liberian government on Nigeria's position on AFRICOM.
“With the planned debt cancellation, I think government has already expressed its feeling, not only on AFRICOM, but Liberia's planned hosting of AFRICOM,” Akinyemi said.
