Tourists in Amsterdam could soon be banned from buying marijuana in coffee shops if government plans go ahead.
Millions of foreigners travel to the Dutch capital city each year — and buying low-cost cannabis legally is on the to-do list for many of them.
But Dutch justice minister Ivo Opstelten has confirmed plans to put an end to the tourist trade in coffee shops, the UK's Guardian newspaper reports.
''Of course tourists are welcome to visit the Netherlands but not only to visit the coffee shops,'' Mr Opstelten told the newspaper.
''In the near future, if we work out the processes, the coffee shops will not be accessible to tourists."
An unnamed coffee shop owner told the Guardian the ban would mean many of Amsterdam's 200 coffee shops would be forced out of business.
'This is very f---ed up,'' he said. ''All these coffee shops will have to close.''
"They say it's to avoid criminality but it will create more criminality. If they can't go to coffee shops they will buy it from Dutch people on the streets,'' another shopkeeper said.
A spokesperson for the Dutch ministry said the coffee shops were not designed to be a tourist attraction and a liberal stance of soft drugs had led to "negative effects".
