By the time I reached my 20s, I was living a life that seemed to belong to someone else. As a teenager I moved through three different high schools, never having the prerequisites to study the areas to which I was most suited. At heart I was an artist, writer and dreamer. I loved languages and literature, art and music, animals and nature. By my 5th year at high school I was studying politics and legal studies and I was getting D’s on my report card, the same report card that used to be filled with A’s.

I ended up having to leave school which meant I took whatever job I could get. I worked in a bank for a number of months, feeling completely bewildered the whole time about what I was doing there – working in a bank is probably a great career, but I had planned to become a journalist or a photographer or a vet. I was eventually fired. By the age of 18 I was a ‘failure’ – a high school dropout who had just been sacked.

 

The hero’s journey always begins with a call

It took me a long time to realise I wasn’t a failure, I had just been trying to be live someone else’s life. It’s a bit like a goldfish trying to thrive in a marine aquarium. After a lot of years and experiences, travel around the world, even counselling, I began to discover the right kind of life for me where I could feel competent and successful.

Now I aim to help others do the same. When you go on a journey to claim your treasure, you identify who you really are so you can become more of yourself again. You begin to look like you, sound like you when you speak, and feel like you when you interact with others. You learn to make choices that are in alignment with your essence rather than the false stories you believed were your truth.

 

If you are ready then doors will open where there were no doors before, and where there would not be doors for anyone else

I find that intuitive creative processes such as art, writing, connecting with nature and even animals are a unique and gentle way to unravel the chaos, find your way out of the labyrinth and come home. I applaud anyone who has the courage to take a hero’s journey, face their shadow and claim their treasure! The best thing is…you don’t have to do it alone.
